Today was a windy day. Not a little wind but a lot. The wind report was that it would be 25mph until 4pm. The problem was that the sun sets at 5pm. This would not leave a lot of time for filming for Project Aerospace. I still needed to take more photographs with my DSLR so I figured I would go to the Park (Stepping Stone Falls) and either take photos first before flying. Once I got to the park the winds were dying down so I decided that I would hike to the location with the Drone equipment and wait for the winds to calm down and stay calmed down. When I got to the location it was 2:30pm and I spent the next 45 mins recording the wind sounds. There was such a variety of sounds from the wind. Little did I know at the time but this would be the best thing to come out of this day of shooting.

The winds stayed low for 15 mins with an occasional strong gust but nothing too bad. So I unpacked the drone that was repaired earlier. I only had 3 batteries, so the plan was to record 15 mins of Video and 4 min of photos (1 photo taken ever half second) in the air. I took off and the drone flew fine. I flew out over the river a little to give myself enough room in case there was a need for an emergency landing. This was probably the best course of action. After recording a few angles and directed movement a large gust of wind came. It was of medium power but it never stopped. I was able to hold my position in the air but I really did not like the conditions. I decided to land and slowly and in control I brought the drone back. Once I was over the location I was going to land at the drone began to buck and have a slight spin. Again like before I decided to land quickly but this time a little slower. I came down to about 12 feet in the air and then landed. When I got the drone I saw what had happened. The arm that was repaired had come loose causing the motor to not function. It’s pretty funny I landed a multi rotor with an engine failure in high winds. I always fly with in line of sight distance but recently I’ve been using FPV (First Pilot view) to see through the drone’s perspective which allows me to get better motion video and compose better photos. I don’t think I could have landed so well if I was only doing line of sight, especially with the spiraling it was doing during the landing.

Once at home I made the same repair again but this time I used a small screw in addition to glue to re-enforce the new support beam I built making it much more secure.
