Meymand is a village and the capital of Meymand Rural District. This district is part of the Central District of Shahr-e Babak County in Kerman province, Iran.
Demographics
In 2006, the National Census recorded that the village had a population of 674 people living in 181 households. The next census in 2011 found 214 people in 74 households. The census in 2016 showed that the village had 105 people in 44 households.
Overview
Living conditions in Meymhand are difficult because the land is very dry, and the weather is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. The local language has many words from the ancient Sassanid and Pahlavi languages.
In 2005, Meymand received the UNESCO-Green Melina Mercouri International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes, which included about $20,000.
On July 4, 2015, the village was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
Maymand and its special place in cultural heritage has been described by Rihanna Ebrahimi as "What makes Maymand specific in the domain of critical heritage studies."
