Palenque, also known as Lakamha in the Itzaʼ language, was a Maya city-state in southern Mexico that fell out of use in the 8th century. The ruins of Palenque date from about 226 BC to around 799 AD. After its decline, the city was covered by trees such as cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla.
The Prambanan Temple Compounds are a World Heritage site that includes a group of Hindu temple compounds located on the border between Yogyakarta and Central Java, Indonesia. This site includes the Prambanan, Lumbung, Bubrah, and Sewu temple compounds, all of which are within the Prambanan Archaeological Park. Locally, these temples are called “candi” in the Indonesian and Javanese languages.
The Potala Palace, located in Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, is a museum and other buildings. It was once the winter home of the Dalai Lamas, built in the dzong style on Marpo Ri, also called Red Mountain. From 1649 to 1959, it was the residence of the Dalai Lamas.
Poblet Abbey, also known as the Royal Abbey of Santa Maria de Poblet (Catalan: Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Poblet), is a Cistercian monastery. It was founded in 1151 by Cistercian monks from France. The monastery is located at the foot of the Prades Mountains in the region of Conca de Barberà, Catalonia, Spain.
The Place Stanislas is a large square in the French city of Nancy, located in the Lorraine historic region. It was built between 1752 and 1756 at the direction of Stanislaus I, a former king of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania who later became the duke of Lorraine. The square is one of the oldest examples of a public square with buildings that share a unified and impressive design, showing the style of 18th-century urban architecture.
Réunion National Park (French: Parc national de La Réunion) is a national park in France located on the island of Réunion, which is a part of France in the western Indian Ocean. The park was created on March 5, 2007, to protect the unique plants and animals found in Les Hauts, the mountainous center of Réunion. It covers about 42% of the island.
The Pilgrimage Church of Saint John of Nepomuk (Czech: Poutní kostel svatého Jana Nepomuckého) at Zelená hora (meaning “Green Hill,” German: Grünberg) is a religious building located at the edge of Žďár nad Sázavou, Czech Republic, near the historical border between Moravia and Bohemia. It is the final work of Johann Santini Aichel, a Bohemian architect who blended the Borrominiesque Baroque style with Gothic elements in both the building’s structure and decorations. In 1719, after the Roman Catholic Church declared the tongue of John of Nepomuk to be unchanged, construction of the church at Zelená hora began.
The Piazza dei Miracoli, also called Piazza del Duomo, is an enclosed area covering 8.87 hectares (21.9 acres) in central Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. It is known as an important place for European medieval art and one of the world’s finest architectural groups. The area was owned by the Catholic Church and includes four major religious buildings: Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistery, the Leaning Tower of Pisa (the cathedral’s bell tower), and the Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery).
Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng (Vietnamese: Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng) is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Bố Trạch and Minh Hóa Commune of central Quảng Trị Province in Vietnam’s North Central Coast region. It is about 500 kilometers south of Hanoi. The park is bordered by Hin Namno National Park in Khammouane Province, Laos, to the west and is 42 kilometers east of the East Sea from its border point.
The rock art site of Tsagaan Salaa is located in the Altai Mountains of western Mongolia, within Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. Approximately 10,000 images are found in an area covering about 15 kilometers on the southern side of the White River Valley. These images, created from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age, mostly show pictures of animals such as livestock and large wild animals, either alone or in large groups.
