Kluane / Wrangell–St. Elias / Glacier Bay / Tatshenshini-Alsek is an international park system located in Canada and the United States, at the border of Yukon, Alaska, and British Columbia. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 because of its beautiful glacier and icefield landscapes and the importance of its habitat for grizzly bears, caribou, and Dall sheep.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 because of its beautiful glacier and icefield landscapes and the importance of its habitat for grizzly bears, caribou, and Dall sheep. The total area of the site is 98,391.21 square kilometers (37,989.06 square miles), which is slightly smaller than the country of South Korea, which has an area of 100,339 square kilometers (38,741 square miles).

The park includes several important landforms, such as the world’s largest non-polar icefield, the largest piedmont glacier in the world, Malaspina Glacier, the world’s longest interior valley glacier, Nabesna Glacier, and Canada’s highest peak and North America’s second-highest peak, Mount Logan, which stands at 5,959 meters (19,551 feet).

Park system

The international system includes parks in two countries and three areas under different governments:

  • Kluane National Park and Reserve, located in Canada
  • Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve, located in the United States
  • Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, located in the United States
  • Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park, located in British Columbia, Canada
