Selection criteria

The locations and paths of this heritage site were chosen because they are important in religious pilgrimages, both in the past and today. It is known for mixing Shinto and Buddhist beliefs and has a clear record of traditions lasting more than 1,200 years. The natural beauty of the Kii peninsula, including its streams, rivers, and waterfalls, was also considered. For this honor, individual buildings at temples and shrines were selected, not the entire sites. Parts of the trails were included, but not the full length of each trail. A total of 242 elements from the sites and pilgrimage routes were chosen for nomination.
