Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Riversleigh / Naracoorte) is a combined site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It includes two locations in Australia that are famous for having many fossils.
The UNESCO listing covers two separate areas where fossils from the Cenozoic Era have been discovered. Riversleigh and Naracoorte are among the world’s 10 greatest fossil sites. Both places are known for having a wide variety of fossils that are well preserved. These fossils show how mammals changed over time in Australia during the last 20 million years. They also show how marsupials changed as the climate changed over the last 170,000 years.
The Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Riversleigh/Naracoorte) was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 because of its outstanding universal value. It was also added to the Australian National Heritage List on 21 May 2007 as a group of areas with great value to Australia.
