History

Bosra was once the capital of the Roman province of Arabia and served as an important place for travelers on the ancient caravan route to Mecca. Inside its large walls, there is a large and impressive 2nd-century Roman theatre, early Christian ruins, and several mosques.

In 1980, the Ancient City of Bosra was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list because it meets criteria (i), (iii), and (vi). The protected area covers 116.2 hectares (287 acres), and the buffer zone includes 200.4 hectares (495 acres).

However, in 2017, the site was added to the World Heritage in Danger list due to armed conflict in the country.
