The Rainforests of the Atsinanana is a World Heritage Site added in 2007. It includes 13 areas across six national parks in eastern Madagascar.

These rainforests are located along the eastern side of the island. They are very important for keeping natural processes that help Madagascar’s unique plants and animals survive. Madagascar has been separate from other land areas for more than 60 million years, so its wildlife evolved without outside influences. The rainforests are protected because they support important ecological and biological processes, as well as many species found nowhere else. Many of these species, like lemurs and other primates, are rare and at risk of disappearing.
