I’ve seen some mixed reviews for this movie and I just wanted to set the record straight. This is a movie you need to see in theaters. This is a movie you need to see in 3D. If you’re going to take anything away from this review that was it, see the movie.
Alice has come back for her second installation simply called Alice through the looking glass. This movie has come back even better the the first. This movies style of hyper fantasy yet somehow very grounded in reality has really come into form. And a good form at that. This movie really ignites the imagination and throughout the movie you’ll feel as though these are real places. 99.99 % of this movie is CG. Not only is it almost all CG (computer generated) a lot of the characters are either animated or have CGI enhancements. By no means are these bad enhancements either. This movie was the most pleasant 3D experience I have had in a long time. Even since avatar.
This is very much a movie you should not only see in the theaters but also spend a little extra to see in 3D. I’d even say go see it in IMAX if you have the chance. The 3D was clearly very much a center point of the making of this film allowing the audience to see deeper into this world of fantasy and adventure. You will find yourself looking beyond the characters and into the environments. Which are breath taking. About 3/4th of the way through watching this film I was saddened that it was coming to a close. Because I was really enjoying the world and the pure digital artistry that was on display.
The story however was okay. I feel that those who have siblings will Identify with this movie more. For they know the real struggle of growing up with rivalry. And this movie plays on that. If I had to give a score to the story I’d say it was a 7.5 out of 10. It was unique and entertaining but not very deep. However very enjoyable.
What this movie clearly lacks in story however it makes up for in visual fidelity. This was a film of such high quality cinematography that there were times when I saw almost no imperfections of lens or whatever media whether film or digital. This is very much a film I would love to see on Blu-ray in 4k and in 3D. In fact I can tell you this. Through the Looking glass was such a good film that I have a spot waiting for it on my shelf once it come out on Blu-ray. Because I will be able to point to it a say there was the time that 3D was nailed perfectly, There was the time 4k was perfect.
In conclusion. Treat yourself to Alice through the looking glass. Don’t do it for story. Do it to go on a digitally generated adventure that will make you lose track of time.
